The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will visit the Umsunduzi local municipality on Wednesday as part of an oversight visit to KwaZulu-Natal this week. Dr. Zweli Mkhize, the chair of Parliament’s portfolio committee on cooperative governance, led a meeting with the leadership and residents of the eThekwini municipality on Tuesday. Today, the committee will be visiting the Umsunduzi local municipality.
“The municipality has faced several challenges under the current administration, including issues with service delivery, fund management, and governance. As part of the response, there will be a community meeting at Pietermaritzburg town hall. This follows comments from Dr. Mkhize, the committee’s chairperson, highlighting various problems in the eThekwini Metro, such as water supply interruptions, poorly maintained and damaged infrastructure, and a decline in tourism.”
“There have been challenges in governance in Ethekwini that have necessitated the need for the president to institute a team to go and help to support the municipality, We are also aware that there have been changes in the leadership but in particular we have seen the report for the auditor general that is indicating that the financial management issue they need to be looked at, that also, most of the financial management weaknesses that they have seen, it also going to do political interferences,” Mkhize explained.
