The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has ruled that Standard Bank must remove Jabulani Khumalo, an expelled member of the MK Party, as a signatory on the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) political party’s bank account. A judgment dated 17 September 2024 reveals that the MK Party took Khumalo to court to have him removed from the bank account. Khumalo argued that he had the right to remain as an authorized signatory, citing the ongoing appeal in the party’s leadership battle currently being heard in court.
The High Court, in its judgment, found that the appeal has no impact on the termination by the MK Party of Khumalo’s authorization to act as a signatory on behalf of the party. The court concluded in its analysis that the MK Party has demonstrated that Khumalo does not have a legal right to remain a signatory on their bank account. As a result, the MK Party’s request was granted, and Khumalo was given a punitive costs order.
