A shutdown has disrupted education, commerce, and traffic along the N17 road in the Bethal area of the Govern Mbeki Local Municipality, Mpumalanga.
The residents in the community are currently protesting against the continuous disruptions in the electricity and water supply. They have been without water for over a month. Jabulani Masilela, a community member, mentioned that the municipality does not give any advance notice before sending workers to disconnect the electricity supply. Masilela stated, “They simply arrive and cut off the electricity, only then giving you a notice stating that your electricity service will be cut off today.”
“There’s this system that the municipality is implementing, if you are not the owner of that household, you are not able to pay or to buy electricity. Many people in the location are staying in their homes because their parents passed away a long time ago and the houses are registered under their names.”
