Minister of Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Maropene Ramokgopa visited the site of a collision between a bakkie and a goods train, which resulted in four deaths and two injuries. The incident occurred between Tsantsabane and Groenwater in the Northern Cape.
“Ramokgopa emphasizes the need for various stakeholders to work together and enhance transport safety campaigns to educate people about the dangers of crossing railways. The incident in the Northern Cape occurred shortly after a similar one in Mpumalanga, where a collision between a school bus and a train resulted in the loss of six students’ lives.”
“We need to ensure that Transnet, the Department of Transport, and the municipality come together to address how we can ensure proper signage and an effective campaign to raise awareness in the community. This is not only important in Postmansburg in the Tsantsabane area, but throughout the entire country. A similar incident occurred with Transnet trains in Mpumalanga, and there are still young people in the hospital as a result. It’s crucial that we prioritize the safety of rail crossings.”
