Commuters in Nzhelele, outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo and surrounding areas, have been stranded after a protest by the Dzanani Taxi Association. Taxi operators closed several parts of the R523 road that connects several villages to nearby towns. It is alleged that one of the operators has been operating without a permit.
The Provincial Transport Department spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, stated that they will be meeting with the association to discuss the issue. Meanwhile, over seventeen taxi associations have suspended operations on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, leaving thousands of commuters stranded. Operators claim that they are being harassed by the Public Transport Enforcement Unit – Operation Shanela.
Disgruntled taxi operators say they will not operate until police release more than 30 minibuses impounded during the anti-crime initiative.
