ActionSA Parliamentary caucus leader Athol Trollip has announced that the party has accepted the African National Congress’s (ANC) offer for the chairperson position of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) without any conditions. The ANC approached ActionSA two weeks ago with the offer for the SCOPA chair in three provinces. The election of chairpersons for Parliament’s Portfolio Committees is set to take place today.
ActionSA has nominated Trollip as the chairperson of SCOPA. Trollip stated, “We have to begin dispelling the perception that Parliament shields a government that is possibly good, but actually wastes money and even permits theft of money. We need to accurately name things, such as calling swimming pools ‘swimming pools’ and not referring to them as ‘fire pools.’ Additionally, Parliament should not defend the indefensible.”
My understanding is that one must account for every single cent. If a service delivery department responsible for maintaining rail infrastructure appears before you, they must account for the state of rail infrastructure in this country.
