The South African Police Union (SAPU) has urged the newly appointed Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, to take a strong stand against police killings. SAPU spokesperson Jabu Mabena emphasized that Mchunu should not interfere with the operational activities of the police, as that is the responsibility of the National Police Commissioner. He also called for an amendment to the police service legislation to effectively address police killings.
Mabena has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare police killings treason. He emphasized the need for new legislation to ensure justice for the killings of police officials. Mabena also highlighted the importance of implementing laws that set a strong example for others and prevent perpetrators from being released on bail after being arrested.
