The Gauteng Police have urged social media users to refrain from spreading fear in communities affected by gang violence. This comes after recent posts claimed that 13 people had been killed in gang-affected areas this week. The police have stated that they have only received reports of three murders this week in Westbury and Sophiatown, and no gang-related murders in Eldorado Park, Riverlea, Noordgesig, and other areas.
The police are closely monitoring several communities in Gauteng. This is in response to a social media post that circulated over the weekend, claiming that several people had been killed due to gang violence in Westbury and Sophiatown. However, the police have denied these claims and cautioned the public against believing misinformation on social media. They have assured that they have implemented measures to address gang violence in those areas.
“The police have been making inroads in reducing gang-related violence. On Thursday, a gang-affiliated suspect was arrested for murder. He has appeared in court and has been remanded in custody. He is due back in court on the 29 June 2024,” says Gauteng Police Spokesperson Brenda Muridili.
