When President Cyril Ramaphosa visits the scene of a collapsed building in George, Western Cape, today, he is due to meet with disaster officials and the families of the workers who lost their lives.
There are currently 33 fatalities.
Zimbabweans, Malawians, Mozambicans, South Africans, and one Lesotho native are among the dead.
An established South African undertaker has agreed to cover the costs of local funerals.
Living in George, Freddy Mafa is a national from Zimbabwe who has been helping the relatives of the deceased.
According to the information we have, Avbob may transport the body to Johannesburg, embalm it in Cape Town, and charge R18,000 for the process. The relatives will then have to pay R7,000 to transport the body home. Mafa says, “The majority of these folks can afford that.
Meanwhile, the developers at the site of the deadly building collapse in George in the Western Cape say they will cooperate with authorities involved in the investigation into the tragedy.
In a statement, Lintel Developers said that they had made arrangements to have representatives at the scene of the accident to support rescue operations. Theuns Kruger, Managing Director, also sent his condolences to the deceased’s families.
The George service clubs in the Western Cape as well as NGO’s have distributed food parcels to the affected families in the George collapsed building disaster. These charity organizations have committed to providing for them for the next few months.
