In Parliament, the National Education, Health, and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) declares that it opposes any move to remove Xolile George, the Secretary to Parliament. It states that efforts are underway to implement the suspension prior to the conclusion of the sixth Parliament.
The union claims to be in favor of George’s transformation of the organization after he was appointed secretary in 2022. According to the report, George turned down ideas to establish a modular structure for Parliament while the damaged buildings were being restored.
According to reports, the construction would have cost R600 million.
S’thembiso Tembe, the chairperson of the Nehawu Parliament, states: “We have heard that following his suspension, one of the secretaries of the two houses would be chosen, and that individual will be charged with the duty of reexamining the modular structure issue. It implies that they will construct that modular structure and go back to the specific problem that he stopped.
Tembe says that some people implicated in the investigation report are seemingly shielded from facing the consequences.
As a union, we also want to clarify that, with regard to the investigative report, we are aware that not all of the people it implicated are currently facing charges. “We are aware that certain individuals named in the report are not among those undergoing the repercussions,” he states.
He says they will oppose the appointment of anyone implicated in the report.
According to the information we now possess, one of the secretaries of the two houses that they are expected to nominate is among the individuals who were implicated in that specific report. Tembe states, “If that occurs, organized labor will reject it.
