The Emergency Management Services (EMS) of the City of Johannesburg has advised residents, particularly those living in informal settlements, to stay alert due to an increased risk of heavy rain and localized flooding in Gauteng. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level five warning for severe thunderstorms expected to affect the central and eastern regions of the country.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says, “This disruptive rain might cause flash floods in low-lying areas, particularly informal settlements. Residents are urged to avoid crossing river streams during their daily activities and instead use designated pedestrian crossings. Motorists should also exercise caution while driving.”
