President Cyril Ramaphosa has encouraged African National Congress (ANC) councillors to follow the example of municipalities led by the Democratic Alliance (DA). He outlined the service delivery action plan that was adopted during the ANC’s National Executive Committee meeting held over the weekend.
Ramaphosa addressed party councillors from across the country at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg as he detailed what they expect from the councillors in their municipalities, as they prepare for the 2026 local elections.
He conceded that South Africa’s best-run municipalities are those governed by the DA.
Ramaphosa says, “We control several municipalities, it is hugely painful each time when the Auditor General comes to report to Cabinet and those municipalities that do best are not ANC-controlled municipalities, and I can name them here, there’s nothing wrong with competition, they are often DA-controlled municipalities.”
“We need to ask ourselves what it is that they are doing that is better than what we are doing. There’s nothing wrong with us saying we want to go and see what Cape Town is doing, what Stellenbosch is doing, how they craft everything.”
