Kaizer Chiefs are back to winning ways in the Betway Premiership. The Chiefs beat a stubborn Sekhukhune United 1-nil in the only league match played earlier on Sunday afternoon. Sekhukhune finished the game with ten men after a late red card to Vuyo Letlape.
The Chiefs have now climbed to fifth on the log, and Sekhukhune remain fourth after their first loss in six matches. The highflying Sekhukhune United came up against the struggling Kaizer Chiefs at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium in the only Betway Premiership match on Sunday. Sekhukhune came into this match with a near-perfect record of four wins in five games and a single draw.
The Chiefs have been inconsistent lately, suffering three losses in their last six matches. They played their most recent game without their suspended coach, Nasreddine Nabi, who received a red card during the last league encounter against the Golden Arrows on Sunday.
In the opening stages of the match, the Chiefs were the first to threaten a goal. They maintained pressure throughout the game, and a few minutes later, Rushwin Dortley was denied by the goalkeeper.
The Chiefs had good buildups but were let down by poor finishing. Sekhukhune keeper Badra Sangare was the busier of the two keepers in the first 30 minutes. After half an hour, Dinoko started playing with more purpose. Late in the first half, the visitors looked on the more dangerous side.
Sangare produced another save to deny the Chiefs four minutes before the break. The Ivorian keeper again kept his team in the game on the stroke of halftime. But it was still goalless at the break, despite the Chiefs’ nine goal attempts. The game resumed with both teams attacking each other. Substitute Yusuf Maart’s attempt went narrowly wide in the 60th minute.
Sangare continued with his heroics, denying Mfundo Vilakazi a one-on-one situation. Sekhukhune finished the match with ten men after a late red card to Vuyo Letlapa following a dangerous foul.
Mfundo Vilakazi capitalized on the numerical advantage, breaking the deadlock with just a few minutes remaining. This was the first loss for Sekhukhune in six matches.
