The Gauteng Health Department has confirmed that its internal investigation cleared the Westbury Clinic in Johannesburg of any wrongdoing related to an expectant mother’s death.
Investigations into the death of 32-year-old Miriam Singh have revealed that an underlying medical condition was the cause. Singh passed away within an hour of being admitted to the clinic on Sunday. On Tuesday, the community held a protest outside the facility, demanding answers regarding her death.
Department spokesperson Motaletale Modiba says, “The internal report found that the correct protocols were followed by the healthcare workers in attendance. The postmortem report has revealed that the patient had a serious underlying condition which contributed to the deterioration of their condition within a short space of time after presenting at our health facility.”
“Given the doctor-patient confidentiality, the department cannot expatiate further the actual medical condition of the patient. However, this has been shared with the family concerned.”
