Manchester City has condemned the online racist abuse directed at captain Kyle Walker after the team’s 2-0 loss to Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday. The 34-year-old defender faced racist insults following the defeat, which left the Premier League side in 22nd place in Europe’s elite club competition.ition.
“We refuse to tolerate discrimination of any kind, regardless of whether that be in stadiums or online. We will be offering Kyle our full support following the disgusting treatment he has received,” City said in a statement on Thursday.
The Premier League also extended its support to Walker and City in dealing with online hate and said, “Racism has no place in our game or anywhere in society.”
Earlier, Walker shared a screenshot of the abuse he received on social media, stating: “No one should ever be subjected to the vile, racist, and threatening abuse that I have encountered online since last night’s match. Instagram and the authorities need to take action to stop this from happening for the sake of everyone suffering from such abuse. It is never acceptable.”
Currently, City is struggling with just one win in their last 10 games across all competitions. Walker emphasized, “To our fans, we will continue to work together as a team to improve and turn things around.”
