The South African Communist Party (SACP) says it has resolved to contest the 2026 Local Government Elections (LGE) independently from its historical ally the African National Congress (ANC).
The party says all the modalities of going it alone in the elections will be thrashed out at its 5th Special National Conference in a fortnight.
This is not the first time it has contested elections after fielding candidates in the Metsimaholo Local Municipality in the Free State.
At the end of their Central Committee meeting, General Secretary Solly Mapaila said that their bilateral talks with the ANC in January would also discuss the matter.
“We had indicated to the ANC that we have decided to contest local elections as the SACP. So, officially and formally now this has been communicated to the ANC.”
