The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West province reports that the party is functioning effectively, despite approximately 60% of its branches not being in good standing. According to reliable information from the SABC, in Bojanala, which is the party’s largest region in the province with 153 branches, fewer than ten branches are currently in good standing.
The terms of office of many Branch Executive Committees (BEC) have expired, and interim structures are currently leading many branches.
The party’s Tumelo Maruping elaborates, “The guidelines that we have issued as the ANC Provincial Executive Committee was that branches that have lapsed since the last national conference must turn the BEC into the BTT and where the BEC does not exist, we then instructed them to establish a task team which will lead to a BBGM, a BBGM is where the BEC gets to be nominated.”
Meanwhile, political analyst Thabang Motswaledi says this situation is worrying.
“It clearly shows you about the kind of leadership that is there in the party to say that are we chasing quantitative or are we chasing qualitative type of leadership in as far as our political dynamics are concerned. Particularly when you come to the North West province where the ANC still finds resonance amongst the people and is still one of the few provinces that is still the stronghold of the African National Congress. So, therefore, this tells a story to say the ANC needs actually to take a mirror and look at itself.”
