The Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court has postponed the case against Musawenkosi Mnikathi, an area manager for the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), who faces charges for allegedly transporting election materials without a police escort during the general elections on May 29.
Members of the uMKhonto weSizwe (MK) Party who laid the complaint against Mnikathi attended the case.
Defence advocate Ashleigh Jennings says the case was postponed because the prosecutor is sick.
“What is happening today is that we came back and we have got electricity and we have water, but we don’t have a prosecutor, so the matter has been adjourned to the 26th so that our application can be dealt with. After that, I hope I will able to give you a full interview but at the moment I cannot say much because the matter is still in court.”
The spokesperson for the MK Party in the Moses Mabhida region, Carry Ngcobo, has expressed frustration regarding the ongoing delays in a verdict.
“As MK, we are quite frustrated that every time the verdict is supposed to be issued, there seems to be a delay in the process. This is why we feel so frustrated. We believe that the outcome of this case will have a significant impact, especially considering that when we claimed our votes were rigged and that we had been robbed after the general election in May 2024, it felt as if we were simply being dismissed. This case will certainly provide evidence to support our claims, yet it appears that there are deliberate tactics being employed to avoid confronting this reality.”
