AfriForum has invited all political parties that oppose the Basic Education Law Amendment (BELA) Act to participate in their march today.
Scores of AfriForum and Solidarity members descended to the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria to oppose the BELA Act.
Both civil organization groups say that clauses 4 and 5 of the BELA Act take away the right of school governing bodies to make important decisions about admissions and language.
AfriForum’s Kallie Kriel stated that they aimed for broad representation from various parties in the Government of National Unity when they presented their memorandum.
“Firstly, we invited the Presidency and all ministers who oppose the Basic Education Law Amendment (BELA). We also invited representatives from the Education Department. The Presidency informed us that Minister Gayton McKenzie would accept the memorandum on their behalf. Our intention was to ensure a diverse representation from the Government of National Unity, which includes members from the Freedom Front, the Democratic Alliance (DA), and the Patriotic Alliance (PA).”
