The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has denied accusations that it is conducting secret meetings with the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) in an effort to dismantle the current Government of Provincial Unity (GPU). Following the May general elections, where the ANC was unable to secure an outright majority in the province, the party had to form a coalition government with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the Democratic Alliance (DA), and the National Freedom Party (NFP).
The ANC’s deputy chairperson in KZN, Nomagugu Simelane spoke to the media in Durban.
“Are we leaving the GPU? Are we working with the MK? Not! You will understand that the MKP was the first to state the mouth of the founder’s daughter, uDuduzile. She said they will never work with the ANC and they have made it a point that they do not work with us. Of course, they have made it a stance that they will never work with us. We are here and working with those who care for the interests of the people of KZN. We will make sure that it works.”
Meanwhile addressing speculation on the disbandment of the ANC’s Provincial Executive Council (PEC), the party’s KZN Secretary Bheki Mtolo says the PEC will abide by any decision taken by its national structures.
“The National Executive Council (NEC) of the ANC is the highest organ. It must lead the organization to its entirety for the whole five-year term. In its wisdom, the NEC can take any decision at any time regarding the functionality of its structures. What I can assure you is that those who are members of the ANC are genuine and loyal. Once the NEC decision has been taken effect, all members of the ANC in KZN and all structures will abide by the decision of the NEC. We are the subordinates of the National Executive Committee.”
