The state in the case of a Limpopo cop accused of insurance murders and fraud has told the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court that the accused preyed on vulnerable people who later died mysteriously. The state is opposing bail against the accused officer, Rachel Kutumela, and her two co-accused, being her daughter and sister.
Kutumela faces nine murder and insurance fraud charges amounting to R10 million.
Prosecutor Advocate Kgaugelo Lekoloane says Kutumela covered funeral costs for most accused and enriched herself.
“The state had found that all the people that you benefited from were all vulnerable. It was a pattern and all of them would die mysteriously. Some of them would be burned, and some would be involved in car accidents. Why is it that you are the only one who seems to have benefited from all three insurance claims? You also would transfer a huge amount of money to the accused three whenever you receive money from the insurance,” says Lekoloane.
