The Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC), Fikile Mbalula, has issued a warning to party members regarding premature discussions about succession. He stated these concerns during a media briefing at Luthuli House, where he shared the outcomes of the ANC’s recent special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
This meeting focused on strategies to renew the party, enhance the capacity of its branches, and improve public accountability.
Mbalula stated that discussions about leadership within the party distract from fulfilling its mandate and resolutions. He explained, “The NEC resolved that a guiding framework on leadership issues and processes should be developed, circulated to all structures, and discussed. Once adopted, this framework will guide leadership processes at the branch, regional, provincial, and national levels. The ANC’s Electoral Committee, led by Comrade Kgalema Motlanthe, will examine the influence of money in leadership elections.”
