Police Constable Minenhle Makhaye is scheduled to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today after being allegedly found in possession of a bank card belonging to a hijacking victim, along with 105 unknown bank cards. In previous proceedings, the court heard that Makhaye may face additional charges. He is currently charged with fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
Makhaye is accused of taking the hijack victim’s card while driving the recovered vehicle to the Malvern police station.
The hijacking incident, which took place at a fast-food outlet last month, resulted in the tragic death of 11-year-old Zarah Ramsamy. While her family attempted to flee, Ramsamy hid under the vehicle, but the hijackers drove over her, leading to her death.
The State has confirmed that Makhaye is not connected to the hijacking or the murder of Ramsamy.
