A former African National Congress (ANC) MP and six alleged accomplices are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in eastern Johannesburg today.
The suspects face charges including fraud and theft.
The suspects handed themselves into the Hawks in Gauteng this morning.
The seven suspects, who included senior officials, company directors, and the former African National Congress (ANC) MP, were arrested following a forensic report by the Specialised Investigation Unit (SIU).
The report reveals that in October 2016, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development issued a tender requesting proposals to integrate and formalize waste operations and waste into the conventional waste management economy. The tender, worth approximately R$27 million, was awarded to Enviro-Mobi in March 2017. The contractual agreement between the department and Enviro-Mobi stipulated that the department could consider paying on the condition that 50% of the work was completed and no advance payments could be made to the service provider.
However, during the investigation, it was discovered that more than R$25 million had been paid to Enviro-Mobi for 200 three-wheeled motorized vehicles, although the service provider remained the owner of all the goods.
It is also alleged that the company did not disclose in its tender proposal its affiliation with the politician who was a member of Parliament.
