The Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, has warned that the government’s decision to reduce education budgets in the midst of rising unemployment could spell disaster. He has accused the national government of creating a funding crisis in education.
The Western Cape Education Department has announced plans to cut over 2,400 teacher posts next year due to budget shortfalls. During a speech at the Anglican Church’s provincial Synod, the Archbishop emphasized the severe consequences of provinces being forced to cut essential services such as feeding and transporting learners throughout the country.
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has attributed the financial crisis in the education sector to “aggressive budget cuts, economic stagnation, and fiscal mismanagement across government.”
