A 40-year-old Zambian national was arrested by Gauteng police at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday for his alleged involvement in several kidnappings across the country. Police believe the suspect is the leader of a kidnapping syndicate targeting businessmen. Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe stated that the suspect had been under police surveillance after a South African businessman was kidnapped in Roodepoort, Gauteng, in July.
“We have been searching for this specific suspect, whom we believe is a key figure in the drug case. We would like to congratulate our team for their hard work in tracing this suspect,” said Mathe. She added that upon arrival at the airport, the man was intercepted and arrested. He is set to be charged alongside eight other suspects for the kidnapping of the businessman, as well as for a drug-related charge.
