ActionSA Parliamentary Caucus leader, Athol Trollip, has stated that the party has written to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, to address allegations of financial misconduct and irregular tender awarding at Matatiele Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
Trollip has mentioned that an application has been filed to stop the awarding of the security contract for the Municipal Mayor, Sonwabile Mngenela. Despite this, a R68-million contract was awarded to a security company while the court application is ongoing. Trollip stated that ActionSA believes the municipality is turning into a mafia state.
“And even more concerning is the behavior of the Mayor of Matatiele, who is accompanied by armed guards from one tender transaction to another for security. This kind of behavior is indicative of a mafia state and gangster operations. We have written to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to request action regarding the state of affairs in Matatiele. We cannot continue to tolerate gangster behavior and mafia state operations in local government.”
