President Cyril Ramaphosa will be responding to the debate on his Opening of Parliament Address at the Cape Town City Hall later this morning. Ramaphosa delivered his speech on Thursday evening, and political parties had the opportunity to debate it during a marathon sitting on Friday.
In his speech, the first to be delivered as the head of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Ramaphosa said that the seventh administration would focus on inclusive growth and job creation, as well as reducing poverty and the high cost of living. He also added that his administration would aim to build a capable, ethical, and developmental state.
The members of the GNU did not hold back in their criticism during the speech, while the opposition benches accused Ramaphosa of not introducing any new ideas. Dr. John Hlophe, the Parliamentary leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, reiterated the party’s election promise to amend the section of the Constitution dealing with land expropriation.
