The eThekwini Municipal Council will have a special sitting today to vote for the appointment of a new Mayor. This comes after the redeployment of Mxolisi Kaunda last month. Kaunda was redeployed by the ANC to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in Cape Town.
The only metropolitan area run by the African National Congress (ANC) in the country, eThekwini, has been criticized by residents for various service delivery issues such as water shortages and sewerage infrastructure breakdowns.
In the past month, the ANC moved its chairperson of the Defence Portfolio Committee in the National Assembly, Cyril Xaba, to the eThekwini Metro Council.
Xaba, who served as the KwaZulu-Natal Agriculture MEC from 2014 to 2019, assumed the position left open by Kaunda. Kaunda embraced his reassignment and defended himself against critics who have criticized the state of service delivery in the Metro, stating that his actions speak for themselves.
